Description
The Logic is hiring an Alberta-based reporter.
About The Logic:
The Logic is a leading source of business and technology news in Canada, offering subscribers in-depth reporting on the businesses, people and policies that move the country forward.
Founded in 2018, we are backed by the Financial Times, with headquarters in Toronto and bureaus in Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal. The Logic’s award-winning original journalism which includes a suite of newsletters and a slate of in-person and virtual events, reaches hundreds of thousands of Canadians and is syndicated to a global audience of financial professionals. Our subscribers are at the centre of everything we do. We believe Canadian journalism has a bright future.
About the role:
The Alberta reporter will break news and deliver sharp, agenda-setting coverage of the companies, people, projects and industries in the region that help drive the Canadian economy. The person will pitch, report and write stories on tight deadlines, and chase breaking news as assigned by The Logic's editors. They will pitch longer-term assignments, and partner with colleagues on team projects.
This is a full-time staff job with a salary range of $69,763.93 to $108,837.60. It is based in Calgary, where the person may work remotely but must be present to cover news and events as needed. The role requires occasional travel outside of Calgary.
What you'll do:
- Play a key role on The Logic’s national desk, providing coverage focused on, but not limited to, the energy, technology and cleantech sectors
- Report on business and the economy, working closely with teammates in The Logic's other bureaus
- Generate unique story ideas and break exclusive news about the companies, industries and issues you cover
- Write in-depth analysis and longform features on key companies, policy questions and business players, and contribute to other editorial products including The Logic Briefing newsletter
- Be an ambassador for The Logic in the region, representing the newsroom and the brand at public events and in The Logic’s virtual and in-person live journalism events
Who you are:
The successful candidate will ideally have some business journalism experience, but we welcome applications from journalists who have done first-rate work covering other subjects. We’re looking for:
- A journalist with experience or a keen interest in reporting on energy, business and the economy
- An enterprising self-starter adept at developing sources to help them break news, but also comfortable finding stories in public filings, data sets and access-to-information returns
- An exceptional writer who puts in the work to transform complex financial topics into clear, engaging and accurate stories that help readers understand how money moves and why those moves matter
- Someone who takes as much pride in contributing to our daily newsletter as they do in writing news stories and features, and who is comfortable reporting and writing in a range of styles while promoting diversity of thought and representation in storytelling
- A team player with an adaptive and entrepreneurial mindset who wants to grow with the organization and who will enjoy working at a startup
- Someone who’s committed to building a collegial, collaborative newsroom that treats all its members with respect
Benefits of working at The Logic:
- Competitive compensation package with generous paid time off and equity options
- Comprehensive benefits plan including parental leave top-up, fertility coverage, dental, vision, HSA, EAP and more
- Professional development opportunities
Work arrangements at The Logic:
The Logic is pleased to provide work arrangements through which employees can produce their best work. We are a distributed team and work remotely across Canada. For team members in Toronto and Ottawa, The Logic offers office space for in-person work, meetings, etc.
To apply, please submit the following:
